The Evolution of Oske
For those of you who don't know, Benicio's first friend was a little blanket/doll he dubbed Oske. Where the name came from I'm not quite sure. Violet and I always called the thing Lambs (adding an S to the end of all his dolls is a Curiel Family Trademark) but from the beginning of Big B's talking days he has called his good pal Oske. Oske has been by his side from the beginning, starting out as a decorative piece that hung in his hardly used crib, then becoming his blanket on long trips in the car or stroller and finally to the present use as a sleeping agent/pillow/cover his head so he doesn't have to see or hear his little brother.
Today Oske is not the necessity he was in the early days. Benicio could go to sleep without him and if we don't bring him up he won't ask why his buddy isn't by his side. Although, I would not want to go more than two days without him and I'm pretty sure Benicio feels the same way. One thing that has caused me some concern is that Benicio no longer calls him Oske, instead referring to him only as Lambs. This has Violet and I questioning whether he called him Oske because it sounded like Lambs or if he named him Oske, heard us always calling him Lambs and finally decided to give up and call him what everybody else was calling him. Makes me feel bad for not following his lead and calling the thing Oske like Benicio may have always wanted us to.
If anything, it shows us that little Benicio is getting older. He's making decisions (sometimes when he feels like his point isn't getting across he'll call mom and dad by their first names; funny at home and hilarious at the local Target). One day he may even decide that he doesn't want to go by Benicio anymore and that everyone should call him Ronaldhino (with his early soccer skills, this may not be too far off).
